The 2011 American Legion Golf Tournament headed up by Al Gruenhagen was held at the Glencoe Country Club in Glencoe, Minnesota, on the 19th, 20th and 21st days of August, 2011. The weather conditions were ideal with temperatures getting into the 80's.
The golfing started out with Medal play on Friday and concluded on Saturday morning to determine the Medal Play Flights. Saturday afternoon was scheduled for a 4-Person Scramble with 54 players participating. Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. the 50-50 drawing netted the winner $600.
After a fine day of golf on Saturday the golfers and/or spouses or friends and Legion members and their spouses and/or friends had a fine meal furnished by the Glencoe Country Club staff consisting of chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn , cucumbers, rolls and a lot of fine deserts furnished by the members.
Sunday started off with a breakfast prepared by the Glencoe Country Club staff consisting of scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, juice or coffee or for the lighter eaters a roll and coffee. At 9:00 a.m. the golfers were mustered outside for a talk by American Legion Post 95 Commander Ernie Breyer which was followed by the Legion Prayer given by Post Chaplain Don Petrick. Following that the City of Glencoe Mayor Randy Wilson gave an inspiring talk, after which he and his wife Kay sang the National Anthem. Next was the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag followed to Taps played by Dennis Wandrei.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. a shotgun start of the final round of golf was begun, which concluded at approximately 1:00 p.m. After the scores were tallied the prizes were handed out to the winners. There were many door prizes given also. The grand prize of a 32 inch television which was won by William Sorensen from Owatonna.
